MAPAVI Award Recipients
MAPAVI is a non-profit 501(c)(3), non sectarian organization founded by Rev. José E. Hoyos and a small team of volunteers in 1992 and incorporated in the state of Virginia in 1996.
At its inception it was supported by Gerardo Aguilera (Chile), Rosa Alba (Colombia), Lucia Arenas (Colombia), Gabriela Barrientos (Colombia), Ileana Mayorga (Nicaragua), and Soledad Wood (Chile).
MAPAVI was initially founded to meet the needs of the thousands of immigration coming into the Washington metropolitan area for the first time, fleeing the violence of civil war or lack of economic opportunity. At that point most of those immigrants needed programs to orient them to the education system, to a new language and culture, health programs, immigration laws, housing, and job sources among other things. Today MAPAVI works in many different areas and countries, including the United States, El Salvador, Bolivia, Colombia and more.
MAPAVI volunteers belong to all races, religions and political persuasions, and their goal is to serve the neediest in society and promote leadership in a world that needs peace and understanding among all people.
MAPAVI and its founder, Rev. Hoyos, have received recognition from various organizations and governmental bodies including United Way (1997), National Institutes of Health (1996), American Heart Association (2000), the President of El Salvador (2006), and the United States Congress (1998).
